Born in Halifax, NS, Singing & Songwriting has always been a passion for Jocelyn that began at an early age. Since childhood she was surrounded by a very large musical family and was inspired by her mother who was a performing singer/songwriter in the Sunshine Band that traveled across Canada in the 70's.
This love for music continued throughout her school years where she was taught classical violin since the age of 9 and a regular participant of youth honor choirs, orchestras, and musical & dramatic theatre into adulthood.
Jocelyn has been influenced by many musical artists from Patsy Cline & Loretta Lynn to Bonnie Raitt & Carly Simon, from Aretha Franklin & Etta James to Lynyrd Skynyrd & The Rolling Stones, from Madonna & Martina McBride to Miranda Lambert & Adel, and everything in between. The driving force in her writing style is a desire to cross and merge genres as well as lyrics, to evoke deep thought and strong feelings of every kind in the listener.
In the beginning of her career, Jocelyn was the Executive Board Treasurer for SANS (Songwriters Association of Nova Scotia) and began showcasing her songs to welcoming audiences and continued to hone her craft as a songwriter and singer.
Jocelyn returned from Nashville, Tennessee in 2014 where she recorded an EP of her original songs at WarnerWorks Studio. Under the direction of Producer/Engineer Bill Warner, her songs were tuned to an original cross between traditional bluegrass and folk. Bill Warner's career credits in Nashville include working at Reba McEntire's Starstruck Publishing company, he eventually become a busy freelance engineer, working at dozens of Nashville's best studios. Bill Warner has logged engineering credits with artists such as Michael W. Smith, The Gaither Vocal Band, Mindy Smith, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, and many others.
After returning from Nashville in 2016, Jocelyn was selected to participate in Bell Media's Club One New Release television series. The series showcases emerging talent across the Maritimes with live performances and interviewing select artists that aired in the Summer of 2017 and can still be found on the Bell Media TV One Network.
Jocelyn was nominated for “Song of The Year” in the Folk/Roots/Americana category at the 2017 Josie Music Awards in Nashville, TN. for her song "Hey Baby" that was produced by Jeff Gray at Magic Brew Studio. "Hey Baby" is in regular rotation on Krave Radio in Fort Worth, TX. and 97.5FM CIOE in Nova Scotia.
In January 2017, Jocelyn joined forces with fellow writer Jeff Gray, and together they formed the roots based singing/songwriting duo, JJ Roots!
"Singing & Songwriting has always been a passion for me that began as a child. I believe my life's musical journey has led me to this pivotal moment in joining forces with Jeff . We are proudly creating songs in a uniquely blended sound of textures and emotion, encompassing and crossing all genres."
Jeff Scott Gray
Jeff was born in San Diego and spent his formative musical years in Alabama and Massachusetts listening and learning from the likes of CCR and Sly and the Family Stone. These early roots were shaken when Jeff discovered rock through The Edgar Winter Group and Bachman Turner Overdrive. It wasn't until 1977 when his passion really took off after discovering the infectious riff rock and theatrical performances of KISS. Over the years he continuously returned to these influences following the likes of Alice Cooper, Metallica, Rush, Slipknot and even Marilyn Manson!
Jeff's musical journey is unusual in that he spent 28 years as a bank executive while maintaining his official garage band superstar status! Time was not wasted however, as Jeff continued to push his guitar playing boundaries, he continuously endeavours to learn. This culminated in a new found passion for acoustic music. Since that time Jeff has penned more songs than in his previous 51 years on this planet!
After many years of honing his skills, now inspired by the amazing talents of Tommy Emmanuel, Jeff has recently taken on the monumental task of becoming a world class finger picker. It is in this environment, that Jeff is thrilled to have teamed up with the super talented Jocelyn Parlee to form JJ ROOTS!
"It is clear to me that my life's musical journey has been preparing me for this shining moment partnering with Jocelyn. Every sliver of my Rock, Metal and Acoustic roots are coming into their own with our music."
