ECMA 2018 announces free, all-ages opening concert on the Halifax Waterfront

...Mo Kenney, Ashley MacIsaac, MAJE, Port Cities, Kalolin Johnson, and more perform

ECMA 2018 is excited to announce a free, all-ages ECMA 30th Anniversary Kick Off Waterfront Concert launched by Waterfront Development in partnership with Port of Halifax, Downtown Halifax Business Commission, Halifax Stanfield International Airport, and Ulnooweg. Taking place on Wednesday, May 02 from 6:30pm-9:30pm, the outdoor concert features performances by Mo Kenney, Ashley MacIsaac, MAJE, Port Cities, Kalolin Johnson, and more.

On the heels of two critically acclaimed albums, Mo Kenney unleashed The Details. A powerful punch from a promising young dynamic artist emerging full of attitude-driven indie rock that will pull at your heartstrings.

One of the most celebrated Canadian roots musicians of all time, Ashley MacIsaac has sold more than a half million albums. He garnered international acclaim by playing the fiddle in that hard-nosed, traditional Cape-Breton style, all while adding his own spin, mixing genres and updating Celtic music to appeal to a broader spectrum of fans.

MAJE is a hip-hop artist hailing from East Preston, who was recently named the winner of the Viola Desmond Songwriter Contest. Following this pivotal moment in his career, he emerged with his new album “Insert Flame Emojis Here,” a clothing line, and performances that encourage youth to follow their dreams.

Bringing together the award-winning talents of Carleton Stone, Breagh Mackinnon, and Dylan Guthro, Port Cities burst onto the Canadian music scene with their self-titled debut. Marked by stellar songs, dynamic vocals, and superior musicianship, the band is receiving rave reviews and are rapidly building a fervent fanbase across Canada and beyond.

Kalolin Johnson is a Mi’kmaq singer/songwriter who presents unique performances by translating her songs into the Mi’kmaq language. Recently, Kalolin performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and was chosen to sing at the closing ceremonies of the Jeux Canada Games in 2011.

Staged on the north side of the Waterfront Warehouse restaurant, and viewable from the water, the waterfront, the parking lot, and vendor locations at Foundation Place, the event serves as the official beginning of the 2018 East Coast Music Awards: Festival and Conference. As part of the event Waterfront Development will be offering free parking in the following parking lots: Foundation Place (1549 Lower Water St), Salter (1521 Lower Water St) and Cunard (1325 Lower Water St) from 5:00pm through 10:00pm.

In tandem with an eclectic music lineup that features a mix of some of the region’s best up-and-coming and most seasoned acts, the concert also provides an opportunity to officially begin a busy and exciting season of events on the Halifax Waterfront.

Boaters are invited to pull up to the docks to watch the show, vendors will be serving up food and other goods, and key sponsors will be on hand to give out free swag.

“Music is a big part of how we celebrate in Nova Scotia and we’re so proud to have the ECMAs back in Halifax this year. To kick off both the ECMA’s 30th anniversary and the season, together with great partners, we’re throwing a big, free, all ages concert on the waterfront,” says Jennifer Angel, Acting President and CEO of Waterfront Development. “Bundle up, bring your friends and join our community in welcoming incredible talent to Halifax and spring to our waterfront.”
