Rita MacNeil, First Lady of Cape Breton, is ‘Flying on Her Own’
into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame
The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) has partnered with the East Coast Music Awards: Festival & Conference, to celebrate the induction of one of Canada’s finest music icons and First Lady of Cape Breton, Rita MacNeil, to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, with support from Warner Chappell Music Canada and SOCAN Foundation.
Some of MacNeil’s best-known songs often spoke of Nova Scotia, however, her cross-genre appeal and immense talent resonated with Canadians across the country and globally. With her shy persona, MacNeil endeared herself to grassroots audiences nationwide and enjoyed commercial success despite not conforming to the music industry’s expectations. Her melody-driven, heartfelt songwriting resisted classification - sometimes country, sometimes hinting of folk, gospel and blues.
“Through her lyrics and songwriting, Rita allowed us into her heart and soul,” said Vanessa Thomas, Executive Director, Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. “The love between songwriter and audience was mutual. Rita didn’t sing to people, she sang for people; and her audiences, in return, gave her strength to overcome her shyness and stage anxiety. There are few artists who have such an intimate and authentic connection with their fans, and that bond lives on through her songs.”
As MacNeil once told the CBC: “The people in this country have given me such a career and loved me back so much.”
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame to honour the tremendous legacy of Rita MacNeil,” said ECMA CEO Andy McLean. “As we celebrate the best of today’s East Coast artists, it’s also important to look back and recognize the impact that songwriters like Rita had on our region and its history. She was a phenomenal talent who represented the very best of our East Coast music community, and we’re very proud to be a part of her induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.”
Following Rita MacNeil’s induction presentation at the East Coast Music Awards, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame will recognize her song writing accomplishments at The National Music Centre in Studio Bell, Calgary. The Centre is the home of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and continues to preserve and honour the legacy of inductees through exhibitions which feature exclusive artifacts, stories and one-of-a-kind memorabilia.

In December of 2011, SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) acquired the CSHF. About the ECMA Honorary Awards
The Bucky Adams Memorial Award: The Bucky Adams Memorial Award recognizes an African Canadian/Black Individual, Group, or Organization that has had a significant impact on the African Canadian/Black and/or overall music industry in Atlantic Canada. This award recognizes those who have demonstrated noteworthy achievement(s) during their music career and music involvements at a regional, national or international level.
Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award: The Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has had a profound and lasting effect on the Atlantic Canadian Music Industry. The award was renamed after Dr. Helen Creighton when Dr. Creighton received the award in 1991. The Board of Directors of the ECMA determines the recipient(s) of this award annually.
Musician’s Achievement Award: The Musician’s Achievement Award recognizes a side player/session musician, preferably from the host region, who exemplifies professionalism and quality musicianship on recordings and/or live performances of East Coast music, and deserves to be recognized for their cumulative contributions. The Board of Directors of the ECMA determines the recipient of this award annually.
Industry Builder Award: Each year the East Coast Music Association Board of Directors selects an individual, group, or organization that has made a significant impact on the welfare of the music industry in Atlantic Canada. The award recognizes the recipients’ genuine contributions to the East Coast music industry that are made, not simply for personal gain, but for the greater development of the East Coast Music industry.
Stompin’ Tom Award: Stompin’ Tom Connors, one of the most well known Canadian musicians, was presented with the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. At that time he agreed to accept the award on one condition – that he could return it! Instead, he requested that an award be created to honour all those who have made a long-term contribution to the East Coast Music Industry and have paved the road for many successful East Coast artists of today. The Stompin’ Tom Award is presented to one individual or group from each of the East Coast Music Association’s five regions (Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Mainland Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Cape Breton).

The ECMA previously announced that all in-person events planned for the 2021 East Coast Music Awards: Festival & Conference will be moved online, due to renewed concerns about rising COVID-19 numbers in Nova Scotia. The in-person components were slated to take place in Sydney, Cape Breton from May 5-9.
The 2021 East Coast Music Awards Show, originally scheduled to take place in Sydney, Cape Breton, will also be presented virtually. Details on the virtual version will be announced in the coming days.
The ECMA’s virtual International Export Buyers Program and virtual industry conference, Our Music Means Business presented by TD, will continue online as planned.

Rita MacNeil, première dame du Cap-Breton, « s’envole de ses propres ailes » au Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens
Le Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens (PACC) s’est associé au festival et au congrès des ECMA pour célébrer l’intronisation de Rita MacNeil, l’une des plus grandes icônes de la musique canadienne et la première dame du Cap-Breton, au Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens, avec l’appui de Warner Chappell Music Canada et de la Fondation SOCAN.
Rita MacNeil parlait souvent de la Nouvelle-Écosse, dans certaines de ses chansons les plus connues, mais l’attrait exercé par sa musique transcendant les genres et son immense talent ont trouvé un écho partout au Canada et ailleurs dans le monde. Malgré sa timidité, elle a su s’attirer l’affection du public partout dans le pays et elle a connu de grands succès commerciaux, sans pour autant se conformer aux attentes de l’industrie musicale. Ses chansons mélodieuses et chargées d’émotion défient toute classification : elles relèvent tantôt de la musique country, tantôt de la musique folklorique, tantôt du gospel et tantôt du blues.
« Rita MacNeil s’est ouverte à nous dans son cœur et dans son âme, par ses paroles et par sa musique», a déclare Vanessa Thomas, directrice exécutive du Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens. « Les gens adoraient l’artiste et elle le leur rendait bien. Rita ne chantait pas devant son public; elle chantait pour son public. Et son auditoire lui donnait, en retour, la force de surmonter sa timidité et son trac. Les artistes qui entretiennent un rapport si intime et si authentique avec leur public sont rares et ce lien survit encore aujourd’hui dans ses chansons. »
Comme l’a déclaré un jour Rita MacNeil à la CBC : « Les gens de ce pays m’ont fait cadeau d’une si belle carrière et ils m’ont tellement aimée en retour. »
« Nous sommes ravis de nous associer au Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens pour rendre hommage à cette artiste extraordinaire qu’était Rita MacNeil », a déclaré Andy McLean, PDG de l’ECMA. « Lors de notre célébration des meilleurs artistes de la côte Est d’aujourd’hui, il est également important pour nous de nous replonger dans le passé et de souligner l’influence d’artistes comme Rita MacNeil sur notre région et sur son histoire. Elle avait un talent phénoménal, représentatif de ce que notre communauté musicale de la ôte Est a de meilleur à offrir, et nous sommes très fiers de participer à son intronisation au Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens. »
Après l’intronisation de Rita MacNeil au panthéon lors du la spectacle de remise des prix de la musique de la côte Est de 2021, le Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens distinguera l’artiste et son œuvre d’auteure-compositeure au Centre national de musique du Studio Bell à Calgary. C’est dans ce centre que se trouve le PACC, qui continue de préserver et d’honorer le legs des artistes membres du panthéon par l’intermédiaire d’expositions présentant des objets exclusifs, des histoires et des souvenirs uniques en leur genre.

Événements organisés par l’ECMA en ligne uniquement, en raison des nouvelles inquiétudes liées à la COVID-19
L’ECMA a annoncé que tous les événements devant se dérouler en personne à l’occasion du festival et du congrès des East Coast Music Awards de 2021 se dérouleront désormais en ligne, en raison des nouvelles inquiétudes liées à l’augmentation soudaine du nombre de cas de COVID-19 en Nouvelle-Écosse. Les événements en personne devaient se dérouler à Sydney, au Cap-Breton, du 5 au 9 mai.
La spectacle de remise des prix de la musique de la côte Est de 2021 , qui devait initialement se dérouler à Sydney, au Cap-Breton, sera également présenté sous une forme virtuelle. Nous annoncerons dans les jours qui viennent de plus amples détails sur la version virtuelle du gala.
Le programme de l’ECMA pour les acheteurs internationaux à l’exportation et le congrès virtuel pour l’industrie, intitulé « Our Music Means Business » et présenté par TD, se déroulera sans changement en ligne, comme prévu.

Cet organisme national à but non lucratif possède son propre conseil d'administration, qui inclut des créateurs et éditeurs de musique anglophones et francophones, ainsi que des représentants de l'industrie du disque. Stompin' Tom Connors, un des musiciens les plus connus du Canada, a reçu le Prix Dr. Helen Creighton pour l’ensemble des réalisations en 1993. À l'époque, il a accepté de recevoir le prix à une condition, c'est-à-dire de pouvoir le retourner! Il a demandé la création d'un prix afin de souligner la contribution de ceux qui ont donné à long terme à l'industrie de la musique de la côte Est tout en ayant pavé le chemin pour plusieurs artistes marquants de la région aujourd'hui. Le prix est remis à un ou des individus ou groupes de chacune des cinq régions de l'Association de la musique de la côte Est (Île-du-Prince-Édouard, Nouveau-Brunswick, Nouvelle-Écosse continentale, Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador et Cap-Breton).
